Like Edvard Grieg, whom the Scandinavians long refused to recognize, the Italians' disregard for Verdi persisted for a decade after his critical acclaim in France and Austria.

(A) Like Edvard Grieg, whom the Scandinavians long refused to recognize,
(B) Like Edvard Grieg, who the Scandinavians long refused to recognize,
(C) Just as Edvard Grieg was long refused recognition by the Scandinavians,
(D) Just as the Scandinavians long refused to recognize Edvard Grieg, so
(E) Like the Scandinavians' long refusal to recognize Edvard Grieg,

OA - E any good reason to eliminate D?

comparison must be between apples to apples.

in D, a whole clause- "scandinavians long refused..."
is not parallel to noun- "italians' disregard"

this is corrected in E. "scandinavians refusal" is parallel to "italians' refusal"

As is used to compare verbs
Like is used to compare nouns

So C & D go out

Left with A, B and E.
A and B compares Edvard Greig with Italians. So incorrect comparison.

E for me

D is missing a helping verb, dont you think? It should have been,
Just as the Scandinavians "have" long refused to recognize Edvard Grieg, so the Italians ...

IMO even if helping verb were there, X in Just as X, so Y, will not be parallel to Y.
