Post-work Activities

by bvs86 » Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:15 pm
Hi Stacy,

I'm new to the forum and I have a few questions on admission stats/requirements. I graduated in 2007 in Computer Science/Engineering from a reputable top 8 engineering school (public) with around a 3.5 GPA. I've been working as a project manager at a Fortune 50 company for the past year and I'm thinking of applying to business school either after 2 or 3 years of work experience.

Assuming I can score a 700+ on my GMAT, what kind of full-time programs would be decent prospects?

Also, what kind of experience outside of work could I do to ramp up my resume and knowledge? I'm near the Chicago area now so I was wondering if earning professional certificates in Finance (graded coursework not counting towards a degree) would help my case.

Thanks

Dear bvs86,

The best things you can do in the next 2-3 years are to maximize your career opportunities, get involved as a leader in a community organization, and score well on the GMAT. Schools want to see progression in your career--not just in title but in responsibilities. They want to see demonstrated leadership and managerial skills. It would also be beneficial to start thinking about your career long term and how an MBA is an important step to make that happen. While a professional certificate is nice and could be helpful to you for many reasons, it will not have as much impact as a successful career path prior to business school.

It is important to identify schools that are the best fit for you, not where you think you will get in. Once you know what you want to do post-MBA, then you can start to identify programs that are the best match.

Good luck,
Lisa
