First Practice Test- What's a good/bad score??

by rwang » Mon Jun 15, 2009 7:26 am
Hello forum:

So I just took my very first practice yesterday and scored a 610. I was a tad dissapointed- I had never done any of these questions before, but I'm aiming for over 700 ultimately. Can anyone pls give me input on how this score looks for a first time, if a 100 pt imporvement is possible/realistic, etc?

I am also slated to start my first prep class in 2 days (manhattan gmat) so any input on how much I can expect to improve would be great. Gracias.

No such thing as too low of a first practice test score. My original diagnostic (I hadn't opened any prep material, or taken a standardized test since the SAT) was a 490. I got a 760 on the actual GMAT several months later.

Your practice scores as you get closer to the test will probably be much more indicative of your actual GMAT score.

I just took my first practice test on Indiana Kelly's site. I got an estimated 560-590, wasn't sure what to think either i.e. is this a good score for a first attempt. I would think it is good for a first shot. Any thougts?

About half of all test-takers never get more than 560 (see https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/gmat-scores ... means.aspx), and that's after they've fully prepared for the test.
I'll let you determine whether or not your initial practice test is good.

Cheers,

@rwang

If you took a timed Official GMATPrep Test(free from mba.com) and took the tests with a little bit of prior exposure to the types and format of the questions, and then scored a 610, then that is a very good score. Based on my experience working with other students, going past 700 is easily within your reach, in fact 750 is not too unrealistic either.
