Need help in improving verbal score

by gmat.jyothi » Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:16 pm
This is the first time i am posting in this forum, I have been a regular follower of this forum though. I need help in improving my verbal score. I am a non native English speaker. I have taken GMAT thrice and below are my scores.
GMAT1 - Dec 2012 - 47(Q) 29(V) - 610
GMAT2 - Apr 2013 - 47(Q) 27(V) - 600
GMAT3 - Jul 2013 - 49(Q) 21(V) - 590

I am very strong at quant. All the time I was concentrating only on verbal but it could not improve my score in verbal. I have been doing a self study till now. I am planing to give GMAT again in another one month. Can some one please suggest a way to improve my verbal score in one month.

Hi gmat.jyothi,

Your Quant ability is very strong, and I would suspect that you'd score in that same range on your next GMAT. Your Verbal scores have kept you from the strong overall score that you're looking for. Moreover, based on the trend in your tests it appears that you're "guessing" a lot during the Verbal section (probably narrowing down the answer choices and talking yourself into choosing one) and you're missing points in all 3 major Verbal categories (SC, RC and CR). Your self-studying has taken you as far as it can, so you're going to have to make some changes.

For many people in your situation, I recommend investing in a GMAT Prep Course option that is online and within your budget. Your Quant scores show that you have a real strong analytical ability, but you need help in transferring those skills over to the Verbal section (and you would probably benefit from learning some Verbal tactics and Grammar Training). Based on your timeline, I'd suggest that you enroll in the EMPOWERgmat course for 24 hours (it's free!) and if you don't like it, then cancel (and you won't be charged). You'll benefit from the advanced verbal tactics, learning how to use Main Point and Author's Focus to answer questions and the easy-to-follow Pairs Training for Grammar rules.

If you have any additional questions, then feel free to contact me directly.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply. As per your suggestion I have enrolled in the Empower GMAT course. Looks like the one month study plan includes GMAT Prep CATs and MCATs which I have already exhausted as part of my self study. Do you suggest any other practice tests in this case?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

Jyothi.
