Nuclear Fusion

by varundaga05 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 10:30 pm
Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.

(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors
(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors
(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in nclear reactors
(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart

I would pick C here. Only A,B and C are contenders but its " do " in C that makes all the difference.
B - Compares Nuclear fusion with nuclear reactors
A - not splitting them apart - BOLD things are redundant here
I am on a break !!

... powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs -- List ends here, we don't need another AND
we cannot have "...Powers X, Y, and Z, and P..." Construction

@one more vote for C!

My take : usage of "as" when a action is compared (Distinguishes C from B)

2. usage of "rather than" is far better that "instead of" (Distinguishes C from B)

3. parallelism is maintained -- merging /splitting

E intends a wrong comparison between a phenomenon (Nuclear fusion)and a equipment (atomic reactors)
Moreover when "and" is used always look for parallelism...U cant see one in E..that shuld ring a alarm ..isnt it???

I will also go with C.

The first portion explains about nuclear fusion Nuclear -- powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bomb

merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart ( them should be nuclei of atoms),

as nuclear reactors do - reactors also merge the nuclei of atoms ( action is taking place)

Thanks,
Viju
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group
