Dear everyone,
Can an expert comment on this?
In one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted, researchers found that 26% of patients suffering from diabetes are overweight and nearly half of those overweight patients consume more than 3000 calories per day, on average.
(A) are overweight and nearly half of those overweight patients consume
(B) are overweight and nearly half of those overweight patients are consuming
(C) are overweight and that nearly half of those overweight patients consume
(D) is overweight and that nearly half of those overweight patients consumes
(E) is overweight and nearly half of those overweight patients consume
OA: (C)
I understand:
They found two things: that 26% of patients suffering from diabetes are overweight, and that nearly half of those overweight patients consume more than 3000 calories per day, on average.
So, answer choices D & E are out since they use singular verb ''is'' with the plural subject.
We are left with A,B,C, so due to the above explanation we have to use ''that'' in order to have parallelism in both tow that clause. A&B are out due to not having that structure to be parallelism, but my question is if in answer choice (C) we had ''are consuming'', Why it would be wrong? Since in the sentence it uses ''are suffering'' and so using ''are consuming'' could be better than ''consume'' to be better parallel???!!
