GMAT Prep - geometry question

Can someone explain the answer to this? Is it the fact that if you draw a straight-line and form a right-triange, one side is the same and since <x is greater than <y, the other side has to be bigger resulting in a larger hyptonesue i.e PQ is > SR?

a) x>y , less the degree a line is angled away fro mthe 180 deg greter is the length of the line of the line formed !

so we know x>y

for example x=80deg, and y=60deg so deviation by 60deg line from 180 deg is less and the length from the line is more than the 80 deg line ! it holds good for all :)

b) x+y>90 it gives no inforation about the individual degrees so not sure

c) together!! again the same point as B

So A is the answer

The shortest distance between TWO parallel line is a line with 90 degrees.

The length of the line INCREASES when the angle DECREASES and once that angle is 0 you will have yourself another parallel line to other two lines and distance will be infinite.

So;

1) Sufficient because , if you know the angles, you can compare the distances

2) Insuf, because you actually dont know X and Y separately

Excellent answer Vishu. However c is not necessary once u determine A is OK and B is not OK.

I am sure it was an oversight !! :-)

Vishu,

the problem does not specify whether x is less or more than 90 degrees. so x can be more than 90. for instance x = 130, and y=80. clause 1 holds true, however we can't answer the question. thus, the conditions are of no help. answer is E
