At a certain diner, a hamburger and coleslaw cost $3.59, and a hamburger and french fries cost $4.40. If french fries cost twice as much as coleslaw, how much do french fries cost?
(A) $0.30
(B) $0.45
(C) $0.60
(D) $0.75
(E) $0.90

Cole = x
Fries = 2x

2x+y=4.40
-X-y =-3.59
___________
x=.81

2(.81) = 1.62

I am coming up with $1.62 for the French fries.

I too am getting 1.62 for fries.
4.40 - 3.59 = .81 (difference between fries and cole slaw)

Since fries are twice as much as coleslaw .81*2 = 1.62

I've filled these values in and it works.....

Man, and I didn't post my answer thinking that maybe I got hit in the head, because I too got the 1.62 answer.

fries = 2 coleslaw

burger + 1/2 fries = 4.40
burger + 1 fries = 3.59

subtract


-1/2 fries = 0.81 => fries 1.82

there is something wrong with the answers?
