After the semicolon ( ; ), the sentence talks about the flow pattern, which is singluar, therefore we use "is" in the final phrase. A,B and D are eliminated.

In E, "although they" points to Flow Pattern, which is not correct.

IMO: C

E?

I think E slightly changes meaning, isn't it both crests and trough that remain stationary, where as in E it refers to crests as stationary?

as rahulakacyrus said...

We need a verb that refers to the "flow patter".. thus a singular verb "is"...

IMO:C
satish.nagdev is also correct in a way as "and" is use as a conjunction and thus "stationary" refers only to crest..

i just know that E with the word although became so illogical. but let's come to C,the crests and troughs remain, what does that refer to?crests?troughs? or both? it is vigorous indicated.
right?

IMO C

The Flow pattern -- Singular Eliminate option A,B,D
In Option C and E
E is passive .. and first part of sentence sounds like active voice.. hence C

I agree with almost everybody: IMO C.

E uses passive voice (they are formed by rapidly moving air).
Also, the verb "remain" is what makes "although" have sense. Otherwise the modifier would be "with stationary crests and troughs although ..." which is kind of awkward and perhaps not finished.
It is much better to say that "something remains stationary although the other thing that forms it moves rapidly" than "stationary something although it is created by other moving thing".

hope it helps.

Regards.

thanks a lot and it's good of you.
C is really better than E.
GMAT always prefers to the better one but not the perfect one.

Will put my 2 cents here, and please correct me if I'm wrong.

E is wrong because "although" was preceded by a phrase not a clause. There should be a verb before "although".

The usage is like the following:

1- Although X, Y.

2- Y although X.

Both X and Y must be clauses (i.e containing verbs)

(I found this in my old notes, can't remember whats the source though. )
