MBA at older age

by javajava » Tue May 08, 2007 1:11 pm
Hi,

I need your opinion with respect to my profile. I m 35 years old and currently attending a small local part-time MBA program. After enrolling in the program, I realized that the student aren't that experienced and some of them came straight from college. It feels like I m not really learning something (besides the foundation, theoretical classes).
I m thinking to apply for couple or 3 Full time accelerated MBA programs like the one offered at Cornell (requires a Masters of Sc., which I already have), Kellogg. I have around 9 years of work experience: High tech firms, very diversified with some international experience. I speak fluently 4 different languages and a highly motivated person and geared towards achieving a MBA. My GMAT score is 720, both undergrad and grad GPAs are 3.3.
My questions are:
1- how is my age affecting my application? I m definitely not aiming for a career in i-banking but rather looking to climb up the ladder quickly either where I am (semiconductors) or biotech, pharmaceutical, etc...
I moved to the United States in my late twenties and it took me a while to get established in here. It wasn't easy but right now I m doing fine.
2- current score is 720 and horribly did on the first one I took without preparation (500), is this a negative thing towards my application?
3- I know It's up to me whether to disclose the fact that I m attending MBA classes in local school, but what if the school I m applying to will reject my application because I m enrolled currently in a MBA already? If I don't disclose it, what if they find out (isn't there a common Financial aid Database that all schools are looking at and my SSN will pop up as currently enrolled in a different program?) in case if I don't show it at my application.

Thanks

1- how is my age affecting my application?
If you are applying to a program with the purpose of advancing in your current company, your age will be less of an issue. I am not clear on whether you are referring to a full time accelerated program or a part time program. Either way, you will need to demonstrate how this will help you advance in yoru role and prove that your company is supportive of this plan.

2- current score is 720 and horribly did on the first one I took without preparation (500), is this a negative thing towards my application?
Don't worry about the GMAT - they will look at the highest score.

3- I know It's up to me whether to disclose the fact that I m attending MBA classes in local school, but what if the school I m applying to will reject my application because I m enrolled currently in a MBA already?
I think it will be fine to tell them that you are in a part time program and explain that while you are gaining from the academics (and hopefully doing well!) you have decided it is not 100% the right fit for you.

Thank you Stacy.

little clarification on 1.

I m intending to apply for the full time accelerated programs at Columbia, Cornell and Kellogg and the goal to advance in my career within my company or another one as long as it is technology oriented. Definitely not going into Finance industry.
