Hey, actually - take a look at the logic of both of those sentences here...I don't think either of them is correct. Does the acreage produce the number? It produces apples, so really you'd need to say "twice as many apples" here.

Not to make this even more confusing, but when I saw your examples that was the first thing that jumped out at me; and I like that, because logic is a lot easier to reproduce on test day than some of these really technical, obscure idiomatic rules.

@Brian : Sorry i didnt edit well this question from OG . Let me make it simple with a prelimanry sentence .

Countable quantity example:
The number of apples in this container is double the number of apples in that container.
The number of apples in this container is twice the number of apples in that container.

Uncountable quantity example:
Milk in this container is double the amount of the milk in that container.
Milk in this container is twice the amount of the milk in that container.

Could you suggest which one of these are correct and why ?

Usually, Twice or Thrice etc. are used with "as many as" construction.
For example:
The number of apples in this container is twice as many as the number of apples in that container.
Milk in this container is twice as much as the amount of the milk in that container.
