Clouds are formed from the evaporation of the oceans' water that is warmed by the Sun and rises high into the atmosphere, condensing in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust.

A. Clouds are formed from the evaporation of the oceans' water that is warmed by the Sun and rises high into the atmosphere, condensing in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust.

B. Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans, which rises high into the atmosphere, condensing in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust.

C. Warmed by the Sun, ocean water evaporates, rises high into the atmosphere, and condenses in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust to form clouds.

D. The water in the oceans evaporates, warmed by the Sun, rises high into the atmosphere, and condenses in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust, which forms clouds.

E. Ocean water, warmed by the Sun, evaporates and rises high into the atmosphere, which then condenses in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust to form as clouds.

OA is C

The objective of this post is to discuss whether the structures in B and D are correct

B) Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans, ...
Is this allowed ? whats exactly wrong with this structure . I cant lay my finger on it
The structure is of the form : clouds form by Noun + Modifier

D) The water in the oceans evaporates, warmed by the Sun, rises ..., and condenses ...

John ran into the gym, excited to be the first participant .
this sentence is correct and is similar to the The Bolded portion in (D)
whats exactly wrong with this structure in D.
Is it okay if the bolded portion is followed by another "item in the list , that is , rises "
i know that there are mistakes in the overall structures of B and D . This is the reason that C is the OA

B. Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans, which rises high into the atmosphere, condensing in tiny droplets on minute particles of dust.
The usage of which is incorrect in this sentence. Here which refers to oceans and thus, conveys a wrong meaning.
B) Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans, ...
Is this allowed ? whats exactly wrong with this structure . I cant lay my finger on it
IMO, I see no problem with the construction, Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water since, -ing form without a comma modifies the immediate preceeding noun (warmth in this case) but somehow, it does not sound good. I mean, I would have gone for this construction with least preference if the sentence was modified to avoid the error (which modifying) as stated earlier.

D's major problem lies a the end: on minute particles of dust, which forms clouds.

"Particles of dust" is a plural subject for the relative clause, and needs to agree with the plural verb "form".

With B, there are certain cases where the GMAT will favor a proper noun (evaporation) over a V-ing noun replacement (evaporating). From what we've seen, the indications are the presence of an article (e.g the, a, an), or an indication of possession.

Incorrect: The evaporating
correct: The evaporation

Incorrect: the organism's trying (V-ing)
Correct: the organism's attempt (true noun)

Hi Geva , Thanks for the Reply.
B) Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans, ...

Geva , so what you are saying is

Clouds form by Verbing is not allowed : Clouds form by evaporating is wrong

Clouds form by Noun is what is required ie:Cloud form by evaporation

D) The water in the oceans evaporates, warmed by the Sun, rises ..., and condenses ...

Geva, Is such a placement of modifiers allowed .
The water VerbS , -ed by X,VerbS ... and VerbS...

This is not the ideal structure because Clouds are not formed by Sun's warmth (which is how this sentence can be interpretted); rather Clouds are formed "when" Sun's warmth does something (evaporates the water).

So this idea has been conveyed in the sentence
Clouds form by the Sun's warmth evaporating the water in the oceans . Isnt it so ?

evaporating is the action denoted in the present participle form.
However my question was in a general context
is it right to say
X verbs by Y Verbing

This is how the sentence is intended to mean, but as I mentioned in my previous mail, this interpretation is not extremely obvious from the sentence construction.

In most such cases, GMAT prefers to use a Relative pronoun (that/which/when etc.).
