Agreed- this has to be A I think.

Statement 1 gives us:
x+1<y

so x has to be less than y and 1 is sufficient.

IMO C

For y<-5,
x<(y+1)
or x<-4
but x>y in this case

so A cannot be the answer.

from (1) and (2):
x<(y+1) and x<(y-1)
if y = -5,
x<-4 and x<-6
so x<-6 or x<y

if y=5
x<4 and x<6
so x<y

Hence C is the answer

(1) x<y-1 - Insufficient by itself
(2) x<y+1 - Insufficient by itself

Taken together:

y-1<x<y+1

Now pick numbers: assume x=3 and y=3.5 which satisfies both statements. One gets x<y
Now assume x=-3 and y=-3.5 which satisfies both statements. One gets x>3.5

Thus, answer is E.

IMO A

1. y>x+1 assuming the following possibs:

x x+1 y>x+1 X<Y?
-1 0 1 Y
2 3 4 Y
-5 -4 -3 Y
-1/2 1/2 0 Y

So sufficient

2. Y>X-1
X X-1 Y>x-1 x<Y?
1 0 1/2 N
3 2 4 Y
so insufficient

Please correct me if there is mistake

Ans is E

1. x<y-1

say x is 5.5 and y is 6. Insufficient

2. x<y+1

say x is 5.5 and y is 5. Insufficient

Together you can tell that statement 1 will always hold true. Which we have shown is insufficient.
