Value x^2+y^2?

by RWO » Fri May 20, 2011 6:22 pm
What is the value of x^2 + y^2 ?
(1) x^2 + y^2 = 2xy + 1
(2) x^2 + y^2 = 4 - 2xy

st(1) can be further simplified as (x-y)^2=1 <> x-y=|1|, Not Sufficient;
st(2) ditto here (x+y)^2=4 <> x+y=|2|, Not Sufficient;

combined st(1&2): since we have mods there is more than one value for x when st(1) is added to st(2).

a)insufficient. (1 equation, 2 variables)
b)insufficient. (1 equation, 2 variables)
a & b together) xy=3/4 thus x^2 + y^2 = 1+3/2 = 5/2
Sufficient.

Add the two equations
2(x^2 + y^2)=5

The two statements together will give a solution.
