Round Off

by shovan85 » Sat Oct 09, 2010 8:10 am
In the number 1.4ab5, a and b represent single positive digits. If x = 1.4ab5, what is the value of 10 - x?

(1) If x is rounded to the nearest hundredth, then 10 - x = 8.56.

(2) If x is rounded to the nearest thousandth, then 10 - x = 8.564.

Also please mention the round off concept for 5.
If 1.65 can we say round off( to 10th place) 1.7 or 1.6

Here's the general rule for rounding:

* If the number you are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round the number up.
* If the number you are rounding is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round the number down.

IS B the answer?

1. 10-x=8,56 thus x=1,44 so a can be 3 or 4 because it still depends on b to know what a is
2. 10-x=8.564 so x=1,436 when x is round to the nearest thousand thus b=5 and a =3 for sure
B is indeed sufficient
pick B
