Three friends rented a car for a week and divided the cost equally. What was the total cost of renting the car?

1) If the three friends lad kept the car for a second week they could have obtained the two week rate, which was 1.5 times the cost of a one week rental.

2) If the fourth friend jioned the three friends and the cost had been divided equally among the four friends, the cost to each of the original three wold have been reduced by $15.

Let DR be the daily rent. To find the toal for week we can multiply by 7

Stmt I

Just gives a relationship between 2 week rent and 1 week rent. The total can vary with ratio mainatined as specified.

Multiple totals possible

Stmt II

7*DR/4 +15 = 7*DR/3

Can solve for DR and then total.

Statement 2 is sufficient

Let the total cost for the week be x
the cost per person is x/3

When the new friend joins the total cost remains the same but the cost per person comes down and becomes x/4

the savings made by the initial friends => x/3 - x/4 = 15

on solving we get the value of x = 180
therefore cost per friend intially is 180/3 = 60
Cost per friend after addition of new dude is 180/4 = 45

Difference is 15
