ANimals in a farm

by tanyajoseph » Mon Sep 10, 2007 1:16 pm
Of the 60 animals on a certain farm, 2/3 are either pigs or cows. how many of the animals are cows?

1) THe farm has more than twice as many cows as it has pigs
2) The farm has more than 12 pigs.

From the question, it can be derived 2/3 of 60 are either cows or pigs. So pigs and cows should be in the 40:20 ratio and the job is to identify which ratio is cows.
Stmt one reads MORE THAN TWICE...which clearly is not the right wording.
Stmt two gives no additional info to help improve the situation.

But GMAT prep ans is C. Am I misunderstandin the question and tryin to read too much ?

I think you misunderstood the questions.
2/3 *60 are cows or pigs.
So C+P=2/3*60=40
1. C>2P: Not sufficient cause C and P can take different values.
2. P>12: Not sufficient. Again C and P can take different values.

Both together.
Let's start with P=13. If P=13, C=26. P+C=39. If P=14, C=28. P+C=42, which is greater than 40. So P=13, and C=40-13=27. So Sufficient.

TT,

There are more than two types of animals (Pigs and Cows) in the farm.
So 2/3rd ofthose all types of animals are either Pigs or Cows.

So basically number of Pigs + number of Cows = 2/3rd of the total numbers of animals (60)

Pigs + Cows = 40

I misunderstood the question I suppose
As I took, P + C = 60.
Which leads to nowhere, and I chose E as the answer
