Hello,

Can you please assist with this question from MGMAT CAT?

If the positive integer x is rounded to the nearest ten, will the result be greater than x ?

(1) If x is divided by 10, the remainder is even.

(2) If x is divided by 5, the remainder is odd.


OA: C


I was not sure if I understood this question clearly. I am thinking that say we have 32.6 and if it is rounded to the nearest ten, we have 33. Similarly if 32.3 is rounded to the nearest 10 we get 32. Is this correct?

Let's rephrase.. to find whether unit digit is lying between 1-5, inclusive

Statement 1:
Remainder can be 2,4,6,8
Numbers : _ _ 2, _ _ 4, _ _ 6, _ _ 8
INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
Remainder can be : 1,3,
The corresponding digits
1 --> _ _ 1 or _ _ 6
3 --> _ _ 3 or _ _ 8
INSUFFICIENT

Combining..
_ _ 6 & _ _ 8
SUFFICIENT

The question says "ten" and not "tenth" .. Also, it's clear from the question that it's an INTEGER.. So, don't go to decimal parts..

However,
32.6 --> 33 [rounded-off to nearest integer]
33 --> 30 [ rounded-off to nearest tens digit]
36 --> 40 [ rounded-off to nearest tens digit]

For your info: if the number is ABC.XYZ
A = Hundreds place
B = Tens place
C = Units Place
X = TENTH Place
Y = Hundredth Place
Z = Thousandth Place

Rahul has explained too good but I want to add my analysis to your error. You have considered x as 32.3 but the question stem says X is an integer. SO its not a fraction it has to be integer like 32 45 36 and so on. You can't take decimal.
