What is the value of x + y?

[1] x y = 24.

[2] x/y = 8/3.

What is the value of x + y?

[1] x y = 24.

[2] x/y = 8/3
.

stmnt 1- xy=24
we cannot determine x+y
Stmnt2 - x/y=8/3
so x=8y/3
or x+y=8y/3+y=11y/3
not sufficient.

combining both statements even wont result in any specific answer
SO IMO E
waiting for the OA and a better expanation!!

This is right that no statement alone is sufficient here. Let's take the two together

Put y = 3 x/8 from [2] in [1], a quadratic in x would be obtained, giving out two results for x; or if you put x = 8 y/3 from [2] in [1], a quadratic in y would be obtained, giving out two results for y. Hence, together [spoiler]too, insufficient
