data sufficiency

34 In a certain year, the port of Valdez Harbor handled 240 percent of the cargo tonnage handled by the port of Duluth. How many tons of cargo were handled by the port of Norfolk Harbor in that year?

1) Valdez Harbor handled 101,000 tons of cargo.
2) Norfolk Harbor handled 15 percent more cargo tonnage than Duluth.

I'll take a crack at this...

What we know: Port of Valdez handled 240% of the total cargo handled by the Port of Duluth.

What we need: How many tons were handled by Norfolk Harbor.

1. We know VH handled 101,000. So here is how I see it...

101,000 = 240% x Port of Duluth Cargo

Solve and we get 42,083.33 tons handled by the port of Duluth.

Now, this is not adequate because we do not know the relationship between Norfolk Harbor and either Valdez or Duluth

2. This gives us the relationship in percentage terms between the Norfolk and Duluth, but we need actual tons. Not adequate.

Together:

We know tons carried by Duluth from 1 and we know the relationship between Norfolk and Duluth from 2, so...

Norfolk = 115% x Duluth

Norfolk = 115% x 42,083.33

Instead of multiplying it out. I took 10% of 42,083.33 + half of that # to get to 15%. Add that to the 42,083.33 and you have your answer. My answer would also be C, coming out to $48,395 if you were to solve it.

1) Valdez Harbor handled 101,000 tons of cargo.
2) Norfolk Harbor handled 15 percent more cargo tonnage than Duluth.
Let's begin by summarizing the given information.

We'll let V = the number of tons handled by Valdez
We'll let D = the number of tons handled by Duluth
and we'll let N = the number of tons handled by Norfolk

If Valdez handled 240 percent of the tonnage handled by Duluth, we can write V = 2.4D

Our goal here is to find the value of N

Statement 1: This tells us that V=101,000

At this point, we know that V = 2.4D and V=101,000, so we could find the value of D, but this would not provide enough information to determine the value of N (and answer the target question)
As such, statement 1 is not sufficient

Statement 2: This tells us that N =1.15D

At this point, we know that: V = 2.4D and N =1.15D, which means we still cannot determine the value of N.
As such, statement 2 is not sufficient

Statements 1 & 2:
Combining all information, we get:
a) V = 2.4D
b) V=101,000
c) N =1.15D

Using a) and b) we could find the value of D (but we won't since all we need to do is show sufficiency)
Once we know the value of D, we can use c) to find the value of N (and answer the target question)
As such, the statements combined provide sufficient information and the answer is C

Cheers,

I did not solve the ques but the answer should be C
Don't look for the incorrect things that you have done rather look for remedies....
