GMATprep Data sufficiency question

by Marioo2 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:56 pm
How many people received a certain survey?

1) six tenths of those who received the survey responded

2) of those who received the survey, 42 responded

OA is C.

Why?

Choose A and got it wrong obviously... i mean the question talks about how many people received not the people who responded it... or am i getting it wrong>?

Yes, the question asks how many people received the survey not how many people responded it. We can proceed as follows,

Say, number of people received the survey = x

Statement 1: Six tenths of those who received the survey responded.
Therefore, number of people responded = (6/10)x
We cannot find x from this.

Not sufficient.

Statement 2: of those who received the survey, 42 responded.
No relation given with x.

Not sufficient.

1 & 2 together: (6/10)x = 42 => x = (42*10)/6
Thus we can find the number of people received the survey.

The correct answer is C.
