A fashion outlet sells three types of pairs of pants: straight leg, boot cut, and loose fit. If 300 pairs of pants were sold during a certain week in June, and 250 of those sold were straight leg or boot cut, how many pairs of boot cut pants were sold?

The outlet sold 100 pairs of straight leg pants during that week.
The outlet sold one-fifth as many loose fit pairs of pants during that week as it did straight leg and boot cut combined.

Karthik

1. The outlet sold 100 pairs of straight leg pants during that week.
2. The outlet sold one-fifth as many loose fit pairs of pants during that week as it did straight leg and boot cut combined.
Let us assume,
  • Number of pairs of straight leg pants sold = S
    Number of pairs of boot cut pants sold = B
    Number of pairs of loose fit pants sold = L
So, (S + B + L) = 300 and (S + B) = 250
So, L = (300 - 250) = 50

We need to find B.

Statement 1: S = 100 --> B = (250 - 100) = 150

Sufficient

Statement 2: L = 1/5 of (S + B)
Already from the question we know that L = 50 = 1/5 of 250
So it is not a new information

Not sufficient

The correct answer is A.
