D
I Chose C

But after looking at OA I realized my mistake (atleast I think so)

We don't need when and In 1833 in same sentence . , C OUT

"1833 founding" is wrong usage - A, B Out

On the acceptance of - wordy - E out

I had picked C too and still don't understand what's wrong with it. Anyone else?

As per my understanding we don't need "when " here

sentence would be better if it reads

Oberlin College in Ohio was a renegade institution, founded in 1833, for its decision to accept both men and women as students.

(E) by deciding at its founding in 1833 on the acceptance of

This one's a deja vu.

A -'at its 1833 founding' - changes the meaning to something which means 'founding number 1833'
B-same as A
C- changes the meaning: 'founded in 1833 for its decision.......' means the College was founded because it decided to incorporate both men and women.....
D-OK
E- 'on the acceptance of ' is not grammatically correct.

D
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

so, i am not an expert so i can't tell with conviction if C is right or not. Of all the choices, C seems to be the best. D sounds incredibly awkward and so does the correction for C that you posted above. If anything, the correct thing should like..

Oberlin College in ohio, founded in 1833, was a renegade institution for its decision....

(C) when it was founded in 1833 for its decision to accept <- changes the meaning ... it was founded for its decision... sounds as if the College was founded because it took some decision...

(D) in deciding at its founding in 1833 to <- This one is correct

Piyush (and all),

I think D seems to be the best option, here's Erin (on testmagic) on the same topic. He is somewhat of an authority in this area.

https://www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentenc ... ege-2.html

I understand what he and others are saying about C and that is it makes it sound as if the college was founded bcoz of its decision. My problem with that though is that when you take the sentence out of context and just put a snippet (as was done in the post just above mine), it seems obvious, when you read the darn thing as a whole, it does make sense.

In a nutshell, i didn't learn much from this, i WILL get one's of this kind wrong in the actual test :(
