Of the votes cast on a certain proposal,
80 more were in favor of the proposal
than were against it. If the number of
votes against the proposal was 40
percent of the total vote, what was the
total number of votes cast?
(Each vote cast was either in favor of
the proposal or against it.)
(A) 480
(B) 400
(C) 300
(D) 240
(E) 160

If Against is 40% of the total then For is 60% or in a ratio of 2:3

2F = 3A or F = 1.5A
F = A + 80

Substituting
1.5A = A + 80

.5 A = 80
A = 160
F = 160 + 80 = 240

400 in total: B

Lets have total= T, so..
.40T = against
80+.40T = in favor

Since people either voted in favor or against that means Against + In Favor = Total... or;
(80+.40T)+.40T = T
Then solve for T
80=.2T
T= 400
The Correct answer is B

Let the total number be x.
=>Against = 0.4x
=> In favour = 80 + 0.4x

now if U observe closely 40% votes have been consumed by "Against votes" and another 40% votes have been consumed by "In favour votes".
So this means the 80 votes would make upto 20% of the votes.
=> 20% ---> 80
=>100% ---> 80(100/20) = 400
so B.
