Global warming

An international group of more than 2,000 scientists project an average
global warming that will be between 1.8 and 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit by the year
2000.
A. project an average global warming that will be between 1.8 and
B. project an average global warming to be from 1.8 to
C. project global warming that will average between 1.8 and
D. projects global warming to average from 1.8 to
E. projects an average global warming of between 1.8 and

I boiled down to D and E but after that nowhere...huh!....any explanations please??

IMO D

in E i think idiomatically the scientist are trying to project a range ...and ranges are expressed in the format " from ..to" ...not and ....think about the average GMAT score of a business school . .... we usually say ..it ranges from x to y ....we dont say it is an average between x and y

In English, we can expect something to happen, but we do not project something to happen, nor do we forecast something to happen.

Other verbs that cannot be used in conjunction with an object and an infinitive are

hope
claim
desire
recommend
insist

IMO : E, you don't say average from..Moreover, the example you have used holds good for RANGE FROM.

Global Warming, increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses of Earth. The planet has warmed (and cooled) many times during the 4.65 billion years of its history. At present Earth appears to be facing a rapid warming, which most scientists believe results, at least in part, from human activities. The chief cause of this warming is thought to be the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which releases into the atmosphere carbon dioxide and other substances known as greenhouse gases. As the atmosphere becomes richer in these gases, it becomes a better insulator, retaining more of the heat provided to the planet by the Sun.

IMO E.

You project something may or may not happen. In E, you project an average between a range whereas in D you say, the range is projected(certain occurence).

@Phil, I am pulled between 2 sides in the preceding discussion. Please provide the OA.

@ Kevin, so would it be unidiomatic to say "projected to be" ? How about "projected at" .

The answer is E. I have checked in other forums.

Option E is better than option D because D exhibits poor idiomatic usage. As Kevin said, 'projects X to do Y' is unidiomatic.

A. project an average global warming that will be between 1.8 and ---> group is singular ...so it should be projects
B. project an average global warming to be from 1.8 to ---> group is singular ...so it should be projects
C. project global warming that will average between 1.8 and ---> group is singular ...so it should be projects
D. projects global warming to average from 1.8 to --> project from 1.8 to 6.3...This is saying that the value would be increasing from 1.8 to 6.3......meaning seems to be wrong.... for example --Apple projects an increase of value of EPS from 1.8 to 6.3...
E. projects an average global warming of between 1.8 and --> Projects between 1.8 and 6.3 -->cream of the crap...looks like the best choice..

My posts will give one complete and crisp solution required to arrive at the correct answer by eliminating the wrong one. An international group of more than 2,000 scientists project an average global warming that will be between 1.8 and 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2000.
(A) project an average global warming that will be between 1.8 and
(B) project an average global warming to be from 1.8 to
(C) project global warming that will average between 1.8 and
(D) projects global warming to average from 1.8 to
(E) projects an average global warming of between 1.8 and

The subject of the sentence is 'group', so the correct verb is 'projects' ... this eliminates A, B, and C.

Also, the average is a fixed number. It is not a range.

Imagine someone average GMAT score is 730 (in multiple attempts).

We can say: His average score is between 720 and 740. CORRECT

But we can't say: His average score is from 720 to 740. INCORRECT

Same deal here: So D is wrong.

Correct: E
