The embedded narrative structure of the Thousand and One Arabian Nights, in which many of the individual tales are stories within stories, nested as many as four layers deep, make mythologists suspect that they were not all written by the same author.


A. make mythologists suspect that they were not all written
B. make mythologists have suspicions that it was all not written
C. make mythologists have suspicions that they were not all written
D. makes mythologists suspect that it was not all written
E. makes mythologists suspect that it was all not written


my doubt: Guru i want to understand one issue in option D and E .can u please tell me as what is the difference between "not all written" AND "all not written". the proclaimed answer is D

Hi aditya8062,

Based on your question, it seems like you dealt with the verb "split" ("make" vs. "makes") correctly - "The embedded narrative structure....MAKES...", which allows us to eliminate A, B and C.

Between D and E, we just have 2 words that are "flip-flopped"

The final grammar rule is really about Parallelism, although it doesn't look like it from the choices.

Consider the opening of this sentence....

"The book was....."

If you trying to convey the opposite idea In parallel form, you would write...

"The book was not...."

This is what separates the final two answer choices.

Final Answer: D

not all written = not every part was written.

I would ignore the SC above.

In A, B and C, make (plural) does not agree with structure (singular).
Eliminate A and B.

D and E: The embedded narrative structure...makes mythologists suspect that it was...
Here, it (subject pronoun) seems to refer to structure (the preceding subject), implying that the STRUCTURE was not all written.
Not the intended meaning.
Eliminate D and E.

None of the answer choices is viable.
