In the state of Michigan, from 1980 to 1989, total spending on books purchased from all the sources increased by 34%. But during the same period, spending on fiction books, most of which were purchased from bookstores selling only new books, grew by 16 %.

Which of the following statements about the period mentioned is best supported by the statements above?
a) Spending on non-fiction books increased by more than 34% percent.
b) Shoppers were more likely to buy fiction books when they went to a bookstore than they were to buy non-fiction.
c) The prices of books purchased at book-stores are higher than those of books purchased elsewhere
d) Individual spending on the books increased, while institutional spending decreased.
e) The number of people who bought books from secondhand bookstores increased during this period.

IMO B

A) Spending on non-fiction books increased by more than 34% percent.. its too strict and we cant say weather spending increased by more than 34%

b) Shoppers were more likely to buy fiction books when they went to a bookstore than they were to buy non-fiction. .. a good contender...its using word likely.
Also if we go to stem we can see that new fiction books sale increased by 16%.There may be some old books also.So we will have 16% + some .It can be more than half ie more than 17%. Also we have word "likely" in statement B

It wins

c) The prices of books purchased at book-stores are higher than those of books purchased elsewhere --Irrevalent

d) Individual spending on the books increased, while institutional spending decreased.---irrevalent

e) The number of people who bought books from secondhand bookstores increased during this period. cant say

hi.........its A

total spending on books purchased from all the sources increased by 34% whereas spending on fiction books grew by 16 %. So spending on non-fiction books must have increased by more than 34% percent so as to bring the overall % to 34 %.
Life is all about ass; you're either covering it, laughing it off, kicking it, kissing it, busting it, trying to get a piece of it, or behaving like one.
