The Parthenon is compared to other Doric temples, not itself. So 'is usual' is more appropriate.

By contrast, see this example to understand where just usual would be appropriate.
Example: His days are longer than usual. (days compared with days)

Explanation from MGMAT:
When something is compared to a subgroup to which it belongs, 'is usual' should be used. When something is compared to itself, 'usual' is fine
