doubt 26

by aditya8062 » Mon Oct 06, 2014 11:20 am
America's nuclear arsenal has expanded, but China's and Pakistan's too.

A- but China's and Pakistan's too.
B- and also China's and Pakistan's.
C- but so have China's and Pakistan's.
D- and so also China's and Pakistan's .
E- but so did China's and Pakistan's .

my doubt: i find this question faulty. the proclaimed answer is C . but what is bothering me is that how can this SC use "BUT" when the intention is not of contrast but of "similar idea"

Hi aditya8062,

I agree that this sentence seems "incomplete." What is the source?

The "intent" is probably to emphasize contrast, but without a longer sentence that "explains" the contrast, this sentence is vague. The 4 wrong answers CAN all be eliminated though (for redundant and/or conversation language).

GMAT SCs are more complete than this example, so I doubt you'll see any SCs that are this limited on Test Day.
