doubt 21

by aditya8062 » Sat Oct 04, 2014 11:11 pm
New spray cans, which do not pollute in the way aerosol cans do, hopefully will reduce levels of pollution.

a.) in the way aerosol cans do, hopefully will reduce

b.) in the way aerosol cans do, will, it is hoped, reduce

c.) like aerosol cans, hopefully will reduce

d.) like aerosol cans, would reduce, hopefully

e.) such as aerosol cans do, will, it is hoped, reduce

my concern: why is option A wrong? what is the correct usage of an adverb "hopefully". can't adverb "hopefully" modify verb "will reduce" in option A?

why is option A wrong?
The primary definition of hopefully is WITH A FULLNESS OF HOPE.
In A, hopefully seems to imply that new spray cans will be FULL OF HOPE when they reduce levels of pollution.
Not the intended meaning.
Eliminate A.
