If \(2x - y = 10\) and \(\dfrac{x}{y} = 3,\) then \(x =\)

A. -10
B. 2
C. 4
D. 6
E. 12

Answer: D

Solution:

From the second equation, we see that x = 3y. Substituting this in the first equation, we have:

2(3y) - y = 10

5y = 10

y = 2

Therefore, x = 3(2) = 6.
