I need some assistance please.....!!!!!!

by jacob » Tue Jul 22, 2008 6:45 pm
Hi guys, I am totally upset, disappointed and I see my life in a distorting frame today….I need some assistance from you guys to help me shape my GMAT score.

I work as a Systems Engineer in a big IT consultancy firm in Australia. I don’t think so I need to talk about my work hours as many of the IT guys know how it is to work in IT industry.

I started studying GMAT about 5 months ago, I can’t say I was a very peculiar and disciplined allocating my time to GMAT studies but on an average I use to study about 2 hours on weekdays and about 4 -5 hours on weekend. When I took my GMATPrep for the first time without any studies I scored 490. But after I started preparing for GMAT my score subsequently went from 490 to the maximum of 750. The last five GMATPrep exams which I took before the real one I score about 700+ in each of them. And I took my GMAT yesterday and I scored 500.

I am very confused and upset on what went wrong there and what happened on that day. I was really hoping to get anything greater than 680. I never got 500, not even in my practise tests. I want to apply in top 20 universities and now I am not sure that should I go for another try. And evenif I score 700 in my second trial, will it make any difference??? Will university consider the difference of about 200 points???

Is there anyone who can help me getting over this dilemma?

Has anyone experience the same before????

I shall appreciate any comments or advice.

I guess it was just a bad day. You should definitely go for it again. If you score well, it WILL make a difference to your application.
Wish you good luck

I agree with Prasanna, it sounds as if you might have, for lack of a better phrase, cracked under pressure. I always recommend my students to not study the day of or night before the exam, to help decrease the level of stress they feel. Also, try not to change your routine right before the test (for example, if you usually go without breakfast, don't eat a huge one, etc.). This will keep you more focused and relaxed.

In general, I believe business schools will only look at the highest GMAT score on your report (some schools may take an average, however, so you should contact the schools you're interested in applying for to obtain their official policy), so if you do score a 700+ on your next one, that will most likely make a big difference in your application.

Good luck, and hope this helps!

Thanks Guys for the reply.

I know i was actually nervous before the exam, Firstly because i always had a fear what if i am not able to get a decent score and secondly, i challenged myself to do heaps of P&C problems before my exam, which stressed me as i am week in P&C.

Guys i scored less in Verbal section as compared to Quant,so can you please shoot me some good books???? I took GMATPrep practise test for about 6-7 times, should i stick to those or should i try some other practise exams ???? Should i take a break for a week or should i start preparing for gmat straight away????

Is it possible to get 700 in the retake ???? i know will be a jump of about 200 points, but i am ready to undergo all the hardwork.

Any peice of advice from any of you guys will be a help.

Jac

That explains it :D . Dont get bogged down by a single topic. If you dont know PC well, probably you may not be able to answer one or at the max two questions. You could guess on these and still get a lot better score. If you lose your cool, the result will be worse.

As far as VA, check out the resources section of this forum. You could use OG and Verbal review to take short tests. To improve in a particular section, you could perfect that first and then take full length tests. This will help you concentrate better.

I would suggest you take a good break (do something refershing) and then come back the prep. It may help a lot. But before you go, make out a plan of action for the retake. You will be fresh now in terms of your memory and will remember what needs to be done.
Wish you good luck
