Seeking an honest opinion

by archiebanker » Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:18 pm
Hi,

Would really appreciate your opinion. Wanted to apply to Columbia's early acceptance program. My issue is that due to my current job (associate at a Canadian investment bank, promoted from analyst) I have not had significant time to study and recently scored 640 on the gmat. I have the equivalent of a 4.0 GPA when translated, 3.5 years of IB including the promotion at a time when others were being laid off, and significant extracurriculars during school and once at work.

Do I need to write again? I really do not intend on doing so. I understand that it would help my chances but I cannot afford the study time to do better (was waking up at 6am just to get an hour in from time to time). Please advise.

All the best,

Arch

Dear Arch,

You can always apply and see what happens; your GPA and work experience could get you to a positive decision. However, it would not surprise me if Columbia declines to interview you based on your GMAT score. If you feel you cannot retake the GMAT to increase your score, then you need to ensure the rest of your application is stellar. I would also suggest making personal connections with more than one admissions staff to aid your case.

Best of luck,
Lisa
