IMO : E
D and A are same - eliminated - sentences starting with NOT looks little awkward to me.
B, C - Does not put any subject to comparing with John - wrong

E - Correct

Im not quite sure about the exact grammatical reason, hope somebody will help.

Let me just rephrase the question.

No less an expert than John H. Mc Whorter has claimed that African children do poorly in schools because of implicit social pressure to fail academically.

B. Not less an expert

I would recommend finding a new book. That sentence is just wrong and I remember another Critical Reasoning question that you posted from them that was just blatently wrong as well. If its your only source, then continue to use it; otherwise, use material that won't make simple mistakes like that.

Manhattan is a trusted source, though as you have pointed out, they are a few errors. I guess i should stop posting such questions.


gmatmachoman, can you explain the reasons, as osirius pointed out that in the absence of another subject, this sentence is grammatically wrong.

Lets take it step by step.

E is wrong because it is tooooo wordy . Besides it means an expert (someone else) less than John has claimed. Which is wrong .coz we are talking about the guy john himself.

C is wrong coz its missing out the comparison word.

D is wrong coz again it compares another person with John

Left with A and B now.

B is wrong coz not less an expert than what ? who ? try fitting option B in the question sentence. it wont fit well.

Left with A. the final correct answer. Its saying John isnt less than any expert and has claimed blah! Correct comparison. Meaning stays intact .

Definitely it helped bhumika, i have come across such sentences elsewhere and now it makes sense.

Subject is not required as the person is being compared to himself.

just goggled, and found out this sentence, but the usage is very rare.

No less an expert than Newt Gingrich says, "Hillary has become one of the very few people who know what to do about health care."
