Local reporters investigating the labor dispute reported that only half of the workers in the plant were covered by the union health plan; at least as much as a hundred and more others had not any health insurance whatsoever.

much is noncountable pronoun....many wud have been good.....use of bth at least and more makes it redundant


(B) at least as much as more than a hundred others had no

at least as / more redundant

(C) more than a hundred others had no
correct

(D) much more than a hundred others had no
much is noncountable pronoun....many wud have been good

(E) more than a hundred others did not have
not llel with non underline part in voice; the non underlined part is passive but the underline is active in E

whew finally got one right... i chose C

although when do you know to use "had no" vs. "did not have"? the difference between C & E

here the diff was in the voice of s/c
c is passive llel to passive voice of non underlined part

e is active

(B) at least as much as more than a hundred others had no - same as A . ELIMINATE

(C) more than a hundred others had no - active . CORRECT ANSWER

(D) much more than a hundred others had no - same as A . ELIMINATE

(E) more than a hundred others did not have - Passive . ELIMINATE

I would not eliminate "E" for the reasons stated above....IMHO E doesnot have an active voice/ passive error.

E is wrong because of the word "whatsoever", which follows the underlined part.

Remember you use "whatsoever" after a noun group (determiner + noun) in order to emphasize a negative statement....

a noun group such as "no health insurance", "any health insurance"..etc.

If E were re-worded as "more than a hundred others did not have any" then E would be just as good as C
