The region in southern Asia, WHAT vs THAT

The region in southern Asia formerly under British rule includes the areas that are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
(a) includes the areas that are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar
(b) include what is now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar
(c) included the areas that are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and what is now Myanmar
(d) included the areas that are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and they ruled Myanmar
(e) include what are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar

OA is A. I went to C, since past tense looks nore logical for me. I dislike WHAT IS now, but it seemed ok for me.

Could smb explain the difference btw WHAT and THAT. thank you in advance

region is singular so includes, this solves the problem :)

Why you think past tense is required.

because we are talking about past. THE REGION INCLUDED smth THAT IS NOW smth.

Hi Experts,
This question is from Kaplan test. Although I chose the option "A" I want to
understand the concept correctly. Please tell me why "Included" is wrong, if I
rephrase the sentence in the following way.

The region in southern Asia formerly under British rule included the areas that are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.

Does inclusion of "included" nonsensically imply that the areas were in the past
and don't exist anymore ?

HI TopGmat,

You answered your query yourself :)
you're correct that "included" nonsensically implies that the areas were included in the past
and are no longer part of the region.

But whats the point of saying " regions that are now " unless the author wants to compare the past to the present

"The region includes areas that are now...". Here the sub clause following "that" defines areas
and not region.

I hope this helps.
Also note that region is singular.
