Extended!

by gmat_perfect » Sun Aug 29, 2010 3:25 pm
Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in women's apparel, the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale in all of its stores.

(A) its many problems had been the recent
(B) its many problems has been the recently
(C) its many problems is the recently
(D) their many problems is the recent
(E) their many problems had been the recent
OA: A
How is the correct answer correct?

Why are the wrong options wrong?

Thanks.

First, Identify the error
its many problems had been the recent
Here, subject of the sentence is the seven-store retailer, so its is correct. So, D & E are gone.
No specific error found in original sentence, so move on to other answer choices.

B & C changed the word recent to recently, which changes the meaning. "Recently" modifies "extended" incorrectly changing the meaning of the sentence. It says extension of sales slump is recent, where as original says, phenomenon of extended sales slump is recent. B & C also change the verb tense from past perfect to present perfect (in case of B) and simple present tense (incase of C).
