A Little Help Stacy Blackman Please.

by ajmoney09 » Fri Aug 22, 2008 2:35 pm
I know this is for the MBA but i am applying to Cornell for the MMH program.

I have good management skills, as have grown up around Hotel business and have consistently worked in hotels since I was 12.

Did Internship with Four Seasons even...

I also have helped re-open 2 New hotels this summer.....

My GPA is low because I use to be Pre dental at one point. :? ...but the last two years I worked my but off and have a 3.2 right now. I am overloading with classes this semester looking to get straight As to boost it even more.

I am Vice President of one of the biggest organizations on campus for the last three years. And I feel like I have turned the organization around in a positive manner, because I have added 3 NEW events to the already 5 events we use to hold. Also the organization was Un-budgeted 4 years ago and today we are the most funded organization on campus.....

Now My biggest downfalll......I got a 530 on GMAT today.....

Wat do you think are my chances of getting into this program....

Also can you tell me if I have a good chance of getting into McCombs MBA in Austin Texas......(I know that before my GMAT it was a 5% chance, but now I bet it is a 1% chance...) can you help me out I am getting nervous and scared and feel like ripping my head off.

I am planning on taking my GMAT again in January.....Looking ot get a score like I have been on my practice tests(which is about a 100 points higher :!: ) Do you think that will help me? I feel like it will be a little too laate to do it in January.

Even though my GMAT is low i feel like I have a chance at cornell MMH atleast....Because of my Experience, what do you think?

Thanks.

Dear ajmoney09,

I'm not familiar with the applicant pool of the MMH program at Cornell, so I really cannot comment on your chances there. It appears you have some great internship experience that will be valuable and you are improving your transcript. However you are falling short on the GMAT for this program as the average for the MMH is 640.

Likewise, your chances at McCombs are slim with a 530 and no professional work experience. McCombs takes very few students directly from undergraduate programs. The ones they do admit have high GMAT and GPA numbers. However, I think you need to ask yourself what you want to do with your career. If you want to do hospitality management, then the MMH is the better route for you.

I would strongly encourage you to retake your GMAT and try to get your score up into the 600s (the higher the better). I think you have a better shot at the MMH program with your current profile, and it is possible you could gain admission there with a 530. But I think getting your GMAT closer to a 600 would put you in a better position.

Good luck,
Lisa
