Profile eval Please...thanks

by Sunny143 » Sat Aug 09, 2008 9:53 am
Here is my profile:

Indian, Male, 29 yrs(will be 30+ when I start, if accepted!).

Education:
Engineer by profession, from a top state university in India(non IIT) and graduated with 80+%(top 10 of the class).
Acads have been strong throughout, scored more than 90% in both class X and XII( High School, was the class topper).

GMAT: 700(48Q, 38V) --- >80 percentile in both.

My strenght is my work ex which is as follows:
Work Experience
-Working as a portfolio manager in the US for the last 2 years( one of the youngest portfolio managers in my company which is a huge global IT blue chip)
-Total Experience 7.5 years...will be 9+ when I apply in 2010.
-Manage X million USD in revenue
-Manage 40+ people both from a project perspective as well from a career manager perspective
-Strong numerical results to show in terms of revenue, PTI, client sat index etc
-Top Talent in my organization( the executive grooming pipeline) - Only a few get nominated and continue.

So, though my demographics are not my strong point( Indian, M, IT) but I hope my work ex gives me an edge since I have had continuous progress thoughout my short career.
I can get good recos I believe and write good essays I hope!

Extracurrics
Not a very strong point in my app but I do have a few.
I am the US state lead for my state for practitioners from my company who come to my state. I have executed this role for the past 2 years and lead a team of around 15 in the state, corodinating get togethers, team building exercises, acting as a single point of contact, providing feedback on company policies etc.

Also, I have founded a couple of technical clubs in my company which I led for a couple of years before moving on.

I am a part of https://www.kiva.org. Its a NGO committed to provide resources to entrepreneur in developing countries using microfinancing techniques. I am active member of this org and regularly help out folks in need.

My target is 1 year( I guess it makes sense with my demographics and exp....doesn't it?) course and since I want to work in Asia in general and India in particular post MBA, I am looking at the following schools as below:
Also, I want to be in IT post MBA, so, I want to advance my career in IT without any switch and may be add the strategy dimension to my profile.

Wharton MBA ( this is a kind dream school you might say....)
INSEAD
ISB
IIMA, 1 year
IIMC, 1 year

Specifically interested to know my chances
Kellog
Hass
Ross/MIT

My questions to you specifically:

1. I am assuming that applying in 2009 with a 2008 GMAT should not be a problem. Please advice if otherwise.
2. How do u evaluate my chances for INSEAD and Wharton specifically....Any other schools I should look at that may have a 1 year course. I know wharton is 2 years but as I said its a dream school and I will make an exception if accepted....
3. How are my chances at Kellog/Ross/Hass/MIT?
4. Any particular weakness that I should focus and try to improve upon? I dont intend to give the GMAT again as a 20-30 point increase will not get me into any school that 700 wouldn't....whats your thought on this?
5. and I forgot to mention that during my undergrads, I had to skip a semester due to a medical reason which I completed soon afterwards. I believe I should make it clear to the adcom upfront rather than being asked about it?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for your time in providing some expert guidance.

Dear Sunny,

I will do my best to answer your questions as follows:

1. I am assuming that applying in 2009 with a 2008 GMAT should not be a problem. Please advice if otherwise.
GMAT scores are good for 5 years, so your 2008 score will suffice.

2. How do u evaluate my chances for INSEAD and Wharton specifically....Any other schools I should look at that may have a 1 year course. I know wharton is 2 years but as I said its a dream school and I will make an exception if accepted....
I think you have strong work experience and agree that one year programs are a good option for you considering your career goals. Be sure to check prerequisites as many of these options in the US require some undergraduate coursework in business, for many a bachelor's degree in business. Assuming you put together a compelling application, you are competitive for your target schools.

3. How are my chances at Kellog/Ross/Hass/MIT?
Chances at these programs are similar to any other top MBA program. It comes down to how strong your application is overall and positively distinguishing yourself from the competition.

4. Any particular weakness that I should focus and try to improve upon? I dont intend to give the GMAT again as a 20-30 point increase will not get me into any school that 700 wouldn't....whats your thought on this?
I do not feel strongly that you need to retake the GMAT as 700 is a great score and 20 points will probably not make a difference. Likewise, I believe your work experience is quite strong and working in the US should help distinguish you.

5. and I forgot to mention that during my undergrads, I had to skip a semester due to a medical reason which I completed soon afterwards. I believe I should make it clear to the adcom upfront rather than being asked about it?
It is always best to directly address any concerns you feel the admissions committees will have on your transcript or resume. If there is a notation on your transcript or you have a hole in the timeline, then it would be best to provide a brief explanation.

Good luck,
Lisa

Dear Lisa,

Thanks a lot for your prompt responces.

Lisa - though I understand that I should play my WE up, but how common do u think is the WE that I have among the Indian, M IT demographics...? Do u think with around 9 years of WE( when I apply), my profile would loose its edge( as you are expected to do managerial stuff with that exp anyway...isn't it?). Should I apply earlier?
Also, do u think my extracurrics are weak? Anything I can do to offset that?
Also, I will be 30+ when I apply, do u think, this will go against me as the average age group for most of the top 10 are in the 28-29 bracket?

Can u recommend any school which has a strong strategy and IT combination?

These are my last questions, I promise ... :) and thanks again.

Dear Sunny,

Working in an IT consulting firm or technology company is common for Indian IT demographic. You need to highlight the managerial skills you have, not the technical skills. Focus on managing people, budgets, projects--showcase how you have added value to the company and the bottom line of the financials. It is best to apply when you feel you are ready for business school and it makes sense for your life. If you feel you are ready at 6 years of experience, apply then. If it is 9 years, then apply at that point.

The average age is 28, so half the class is below and half above. Generally, there are not many people over 32-33 in most full-time programs. There might be a few here or there, but the majority of the class falls between 24-32.

You do not have many extra-curricular activities, but you do have quite a bit of involvement in Kiva. If you want to add something to the mix, you can but I think it is better to show 1 or 2 things with deep involvement and leadership than adding a bunch of stuff within a few months to a year before you apply.

Good luck,
Lisa
