Profile Evaluation - 5 Years Work Ex, GMAT 620

by A.J » Tue Feb 22, 2011 7:40 pm
Hi there,

This is a request for a profile evaluation. Quite honestly, I am not so sure of improving my GMAT score. I just came back from the exam center, and I scored a modest 620 ( Q47,V29 ).Awaiting my AWA scores.
My Verbal score is not this bad to be honest, I normally score around 34-36 range ( or that's what Manhattan, Princeton and Gmat Prep, tells me ), but I suffer from ADHD, and keeping my hyperactivity under control towards the end of the exam is quite a challenge.
The result is always a messed up verbal score. I tried my best to convince GMAC about my disability, but the problem is the exhaustive documentation that they need. I am from a small town in India, and I would never be able to get the documents that GMAC needs to prove my disability, which is right from my early childhood days. ADHD was completely unheard of in India and I believe it still is in small towns, and GMAC wants a complete history of the disability at hand. I am not complaining though, if that's how it is, then so be it.

A bit about my profile, total work experience of 5 years, and quite unfortunately, I fall under the ubiquitous 'Indian IT Male' category.
Education - MS ( Computer Science ) - CGPA 8.16 ( out of 10 )
B.E ( Computer Science ) - CGPA 7.2 ( out of 10 )

I work for IBM, and I have decent international exposure - although I do understand it's nothing to sing praises about.
On top of my work specifics, I have also completed the following certifications,
CABM ( Certified Associate Business Manager ) - Certification Authority, APBM.
GSS ( Global Sales School ) - IBM International Sales Certification, Certified by IBM US. ( But I am not a Seller, nor am I involved in the business vertical ). I work in the capacity of a senior programmer. I completed both these certifications to support my profile.

As for extra curricular activities , I have received an IBM global prize for making a Video on 'Save the energy campaign'.
I am also a Yoga Instructor, a musician and an amateur painter.
I have also done an internship with an NGO to create health care awareness in rural India.

As it is for all Indians, my top choice is ISB ( a bit of a long shot with my GMAT score I presume ), but yeah, a dream is a dream.
My second choice is SP Jain GMBA ( Singapore, Dubai and India ).

How would you rate my chances? Would you give me a 'Thumbs Up' , a 'Thumbs down', or a 'Maybe'?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Sounds like you have a realistic view of your situation and chances. It's always good to have a reach school, a safetly school and a couple of "good shot" schools. I am not seeing a safetly school, which would be a good idea considering your more "common" background compared to the general applicant pool. You should focus on how you are different from similarly qualified applicants. Make the case for why you should be the Indian male IT person they should choose. if you can come up with a compelling answer to that question, you are on your way to acceptance.

AJ,

You may want to tell your ADHD story to the schools you apply to. It will help them understand the context in which they could better evaluate your GMAT. Have you taken GMAT multiple times? If not, I'd recommend taking it atleast once more. Also, CABM and other certification should definitely help you in projecting yourself as a serious candidate. You should also spin your extracurricular the right way in your application. At the end, your chances of success will depend on how well you bring these components together to tell a cohesive and compelling story to the adcom in a manner that will force them to look beyond your GMAT score.

Good luck!

@Bryant - Thanks a bunch for your response. I agree with your words.

@bizschoolprep - Thanks for your response too. Yes, I have appeared for the GMAT multiple times, I didn't think of giving up so soon :). But I also became aware of my limitations, and that i have to work within that scope.
I normally end up getting a high AWA score, mostly a 6. I hope that the schools that I apply to will try connecting the dots and see my AWA score and Verbal score and ask this question - 'Is there something wrong here?'. If they do, I will have a compelling response to that. I truly hope and wish they do.

Thanks again for the responses. I will keep this thread updated as I move along.

Cheerio,
A.J

If they do not see, it's you job to make them see. Use optional essay to explain your side of the story.
