BTG:Is this a Cure or a Disease?

by Pratik Warrrior » Thu Nov 04, 2010 10:07 am
MMMM here i go(after 2 months of sleepless nights and ending up on an alien territory)

I took my GMAT today!! the fourth of november.Ended up with a meagre 690(Q 48, v37).Do not overlook the highlighted quant score.Thats one heck of a reason for my agony.

Newayz too much of intro...well if u guys wanna know my worse part of the struggle here is the link

https://www.beatthegmat.com/need-some-ex ... 68616.html

CAUTION!! Dont bother going through this post without reading that link

Now coming to worst part of my preperation.I was devastated when i read that my chances of improving in verbal were bleak.Specially a guy told i might not even land up in 650,I guess he looked at my GMAT prep score .i took the GMAT prep 2 weeks before my real test and landed up in 640(Q 49, V27).I mentioned that panoc took over me in that test.Compare this verbal score to the real score a straight 10 point increase!! hell yeah i guess i need to be happy with that.Got the blood outta my body despite having a hairline fracture.
After reading that i told myself!! i know ive prepared and i should do it!!...Just sat and analysed my mistakes.I realised that i panicked for the first five-six questions.I got 3-4 outta the first five wrong due to panic. This is where that brilliant algorithm of GMAT prep took over me and i lost my score.Tried quickly coming outta this..Started studying and taking the Manhattan tests. My Morale was low and i thought that this would be my first attempt and i would improve after i probably dont even land up in 650.But ,i dont give up things too easily.I thought if i get a 500 still it should be okay,I thought i'll face anything and i'll not back out.Surprisingy my manhattan test scores were awesome(thanks to my analysis)

MGMAT1-670(q47,v34)*
MGMAT-2 690(Q51,v34)*
MGMAT -3 670(Q45 V36)*
MGMAT - 4 700(Q47,V38)*
MGMAT-5 720(Q 50,V37)*(2 days before my real test)

*--i wrote the essays in al these tests, never used the pause button and exactly took two 8 minute breaks.

Thanks to Ron Purewal!! he pointed out a probable reason for my poor accuracy on CR.This is the reason i call BTG a cure.

I was prepared for the battle!!.I sat for the exam.Quant was tricky. One difference i found between manhattan's quant and the real GMAT's quant was,Manhattan tests quant is Tough real tough....But mind you thats not what the GMAT tests.GMAT's quant is extremely tricky not TOUGH.This is not to say that Manhattan tests are'nt good.I am a big fan fan of manhattans books and tests. The guides and the tests are simply awesome and so are the instructors(U know who i mean :P).
After the quant i was'nt feelin good but i looked at the mirror in the break.Suddenly my hairline crack started paining.A drop of tear ran down my cheek .I sed ive been through all this..Let me just complete what i started.I just went and sat for the verbal.Agian panicked for the first three questions..Later somehow setttled down. From then on the questions seemed easy.i thought i was screwing up but still i wanted to concentrate on every question and give my 100%.Suprisingly i was keepig up time perfectly(better than any other practise test) and i completed the verbal managing a smile on my face.I sed to myself i'll not bother about the score,After all this is not a life changing event.

Then came the worst part 690(Q48,V37).I dint know if i had to feel happy for getting a 37 on verbal or feel devastated for getting a 48 on quant despite being a major in math.i dunno if u have observed, i got a 51 and 50 on math in the manhattan tests.Had i managed a 50 in the real test i would have landed in a 720!!.One heck of a score for my current state of mental affairs.

PS:Please read and forget about the post.Every one has a different stratergy and everyone's mind adopts differently. It's u who has to figure out what your stratergy is and stick to it.If i got a 50 and 51 in quant and screwed up doesnt necessarily mean that the pattern might recur(guys who study Cr can quickly understand this)

In the end,I Love every bit of the GMAT.Every SC,RC,CR,PS and DS.I willl definitely give a second try. Will soon seek some expert advicee for the stratergy.

I have a query,It will be great if some expert can answer this..

Can i consider my current verbal score(37) on the real GMAT not inflated?
I mean...can i baseline my verbal score at 37 and improve from 37 ?...

No score is inflated in real GMAT. You may baseline your verbal score.

Btw, 690 is not at all a meagre score. You're competitive in all schools with this score if the rest of your application is impressive.
