1000 CR- Q i can't figure

by TrizMA » Sat Jun 28, 2008 8:55 am
Couple of answer choices seem right. how to pick the right one? Pls help.

Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn’t care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!

Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the advertisement above?
(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
(E) The Daily Bugle has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than has the Daily Clarion.

thnx

Hi,
IMO,let me elucidate few things.

Because it is a argument,it may have evidence and conclusion.

Conclusion: That the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn't care less about the people of Gothan City.

Evidence: Daily Clarion is the only real voice of the people Gothan City.

The fundamental thing about question like this is if you inadvertently take conclusion for evident, you will miss the point.

Ok. To refute means to prove to be false the argument, you must select answer that denies the conclusion.

A: does not deny anything about Daily Bulge.

B does not denies Daily Bulge

C : does not deny Daily Bulge

D: refuse the fact that Daily Bugle is owned by out-of-town business syndicate. If the Editor-in-chief and all other editorial staff have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years, then you cant really say they less about the people of Gothan City.

E.It is not about how many years Daily Bulge has been publishing.
Answer: D

Hope this helps.

The question asks which of the questions refutes que argument.

Answer a) out of the scope

Answer b) we are looking for something that tells you that the Daily Clarion isn't the real voice after all , i.e. the assumption that weakens the conclusion stated - careful, B seems a bit tricky!

Answer c) out of the scope

Answer D) correct

Answer E) out of the scope.

I hope I made myself clear!

I did fall for B . I thought since the evidence given is that Dialu bulge is outside owned , so t doesn't care for the people of the city. But B says that Dailu Bulge devotes more news to the city than the Clarion. So I felt that it weakned the evidence. Can you eoborat how you identfy not falling for these kind of traps. Where did I go wrong with my reasoning.? Appreciate it.

you're not asked to weaken some evidence, but the argument.

look again:

"Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn’t care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!"

we are said:

- the Daily Bigle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate (that coundn't care less about the people of Gotham City)
- the Daily Clarion is the real voice of the people of Gotham city.

how can we weaken the argument? starting with conclusion: which newspaper is the real voice of the people of Gotham city? Daily Clarion is. and then? we elaborate an assumption from here: it is owned by a business syndicate from the town. from the given answers , can you see any that may weaken this assumption?

yes: answer D: D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.

does this look too confusing?

Thanks, Carol. I think I'm trying to indetify where I'm making a mistake. I beleive in this sentecne , "we elaborate an assumption from here: it is owned by a business syndicate from the town", you meant that we elaborate on the evidence?

I think I relaized the mistake I made in my reasoning. It concludes that we should read the Daily Cliaron since it's the only real voice of the people and it says, Daily bulge is not since it's owned by out pf town business syndicate. So anythiung showing that Daily bulge is owned/run by indeed people in the city will weaken the conclusion. The mistake I made was, I didn't attackt eh central assumtpion , which is the "people in the city/outside the city", but rather went after the "care less" part. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i got a doubt after reading this
accepted that its an argument and will have a evidence and conclusion
but how do we conclude whats the argument and whats the conclusion
is this wrong

Evidence: the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn't care less about the people of Gothan City.

Conclusion: Daily Clarion is the only real voice of the people Gotham City
can anybody clarify pls

A simple tip to figure it out:

The argument is based on (premise) the fact that the owners live out of the city SO (conclusion) they don't care about people in Gotham.

But, if it is proved that they had been living there for more thant ten years, then moved on, the premise of the argumentation is seriously damaged !
