Will I get ANYWHERE with a 650?

by fleurdelisse » Thu Apr 23, 2009 2:59 am
My goal was top 10 schools, namely I am very interested in Columbia. However my dream just crushed about an hour ago.

I totally panicked during the quant section, forcing me to go through more than half of the questions very quickly. I do not know what got into me.

The problem is that I have no time to re-do it. I work on days where they offer it here, and I can't take any more vacation days. And even if I did, I can't guarantee a higher score.

I wanted to apply to the January section. I have 3 years consulting experience, 3.7 GPA and a lot of leadership experience.

Do I stand a chance to apply, or will I have to re-take the GMAT?

Anyone knows anyone who got into the top schools with a less than stellar GMAT score?

Please help!!!!

Thanks

Dear fleurdelisse,

There are many great programs where you would have a chance with a 650 GMAT and 3.7 GPA. However, the ultimate decision will be based on more than those numbers--your essays, recommendations and interviews play a significant role in the decision-making process.

If you are determined to go to a top 10 school, then I do think you should consider taking the GMAT again to increase your score at least 30 points. While it is possible you might gain admission with a 650, your application would be strengthened if you could raise your score closer to/above a 700. You do have time to retake the exam and still make the deadline for the January entry program. Perhaps look for a test date in June or July?

Good luck,
Lisa
