Two days to go!

by Kaunteya » Sun Mar 02, 2008 6:21 pm
Today had to have been the worst so far since I began studying for the GMAT early Jan. The past few days have been great - I got the highest scores so far on the GMATprep and MGMAT practice exams (690). I understood every question that I got wrong and I felt great. Today, I took my 5th MGMAT, it was really tough. I struggled to get to the end, and I was unsure of a the answers on a lot of questions (especially quant). My score was equal to the scores I was getting over a month ago (640).

I made a lot of silly errors, and some answers were not coming to me a easily as they were before (DS). I think I am saturated. I am not a genius and I have studied everyday for the past one and half months full time (I mean upwards of eight hours a day). I think I can't retain anymore. I have two full days before I write the exam on Wednesday (noon - wierd time slot but the only one available). I know that I have some issues especially with permutation/combination/probabilily questions (I just pray that I won't get too many of those question).

Advice please? We can rephrase that statement, what exactly would you recommend I do over the next two days to replicate the scores I got yesterday when I scored the highest ever?

Wish me luck.
Kaunteya

listen maan,

its not that serious maan. With 2 days left, I would just go out and have a beer !!! You already have put in a lot of hard work.

Always remember... You will beat the shitty test no matter what, don't let the stupid 4 hr test bug you so much. Chill out.. watch movie, go out clubbing..

Go to the test center, kill the GMAT and come back.

My advice would be little bit different. How can you waste your preparation just by freaking out? I mean till now you have labored so much and now you left with two days. You can't waste in usual things. It's only two days labor more and then if you made (definitely you will) it the whole world is yours. This is the time to act smartly rather than just blowing up the whole preparation.

Things to do:-
1. Calm down and do the short interval things that make you relax or stress free. (like I use to relax via playing computer games or watching movies.... but always choose short time span one).

2. Pick up your notes and mistakes and revise it throughly.

3. Don't look for new things, as it will stress you more.

4. Don't go for more practice test until you have obsession like me that until I do best in prep test, I can't go further.

5. Just chill and talk to someone whom you loved most or admired most. It will relax you to next level.

6. Just relax dude, its just test and you are prepared well.

7. Revise again, if possible.

8. On test day (as you have test in the afternoon), have your favourate breakfast and very light meal before the test (I usually prefer glass of warm milk with almonds and two boiled eggs, as this give you enough protein for your test sessions).

9. Just relax and beat the GMAT.

I dont think 2 days would make any difference in anyone's prep. State of mind is very IMP. GMAT is all about right frame of mind kinda exam. If you panic, you loose.. simple.

Kaunteya,

I'm going to give you the advice I'm going to give myself 30 days from now (I take the exam April 3). First of all, stop studying. You know everything you need to know by now (if you don't, too late). Work instead on building a positive frame of mind. Visualize the result you want to achieve. At work I have a whiteboard on the wall in my office. It has a huge 700 written on it. I doubt I'll get a 700 (and don't really need that high of a score), but that's what I'm aiming for -- nothing less. I see that number on the whiteboard at least 50 times a day.

Do whatever you need to do to get rid of the anxiety or nervousness. Decide that you won't let any one question fluster you during the test. Focus on the questions you know you are doing well on. You know you're going to get some wrong, so don't let it freak you out.

Find something in your past where you did way better than you thought you would (a success you're proud of). For example, 8 years ago I upgraded my amateur radio license to General Class which required a Morse code test. I studied a lot, but wasn't sure I could listen to Morse code for 5 full minutes and transcribe it all. I did it! I passed with flying colors. I'm using that as reinforcement for doing well on the GMAT.

Confidence is everything. Failure is not an option, so be confident in your success.

Good luck! We'll send you positive thoughts during your exam! :D

black_cat, smar83 and codesnooker,

Thank you all for your advice on how to spend my last two days before I write the exam. I have one day left. I strongly believe in the visualization of the score that you want to achieve approach. I know I can get above 650 and that is my goal. I can do it.

Tomorrow I plan on enjoying the day. It is freezing outside (I live in Montreal, Canada) but nonetheless I plan on going for long jog/stroll. I think I might even visit my buddy, his dog and I are best mates, and I always feel better around Rusty (the dog). Maybe I'll even have a beer (god how I have longed for a cold one). Whatever I end up doing, I think I am going to go over my notes and try to remember all of the rules and exceptions that I have learned over the last 2 months (nothing crazy just a couple of hours). I took my last MGMAT exam today and I scored a 670, and I got a 690 on my 2nd GMATprep exam (but I saw several repeat questions from the past).

I felt better today than I did yesterday. I just can't afford (literally) to take another exam and get more studying materials. A chefs salary is low 25K for 60 hour weeks, and I have been unemployeed for the past 2 months just studying. I really need to get back into the workforce. I appreciate all of your positive thoughts, and good vibes. Really focus and remember that my exam is March 5th (this wednesday at noon). I need all of you guys to send me your brainwaves and positive vibes from noon to 4 and especially during 1:00 to 2:30 when I write the quantative part. I will let you all know how I did, and hope to post on "I Beat The GMAT", rather than "GMAT Strategy". Good night, and good luck all.

If it's not too late, here's some advice on how I wound down my preparation. The last few days, instead of focusing on learning new stuff and what you don't know, go over your notes, lessons learned, and old cats and review what you have learned. The idea is to focus on how much you've learned because that is far more positive than focusing on what you haven't learned or feel you need to work more on. In the few days before your exam, it's already too late to learn new material anyways so focus on reviewing what you know, reinforcing those things, and think about how far you've come along and how much you've learned and prep. Be positive. Win!

Kaunteya...we both have two days left to our tests...mine is on wednesday and where i live it's monday now...I've been studying for the past month ....my grade has still not improved but i AM VISUALIZING THE 700....that's what the secret says and i believe in the secret....RIGHT NOW IM GONA concentrate my revision on SC cuz its not really my hardest but i noticed i've been messing it up quite a little bit....I dont want to freak out....yesterday i did another practice test and i got a 510...my back was killing me...cuz i was sitting on the couch not on a desk :D ...i made double the amount of mistakes than i had made 2 days earlier in my last practice test...and i reckon that it's the fact that im starting first Q right second wrong....that's the problem that's getting my grade down...i remain scoring correctly until the end....so i have to take my time on first q's ...any more advice ? I've fixed my CR too in my practice test(the one before the last one) ofcourse ...what is happening ?
