Terminating Decimal

Q:1 A decimal that doesn't keep going is a terminating decimal. For example 0.55, 1.75, 33.565 are terminating decimals. If x and y are two positive integers, does the ratio of x/y is a terminating decimal?

A: 0<x<100.
b: y is an even prime number.


Q:2 r and s are two non-negative integers. r/s is a terminating decimal?

A: r=100
B: 1<s<5


Hope this question will help others to grasp the concept of terminating decimal and the formation of question type.

Question 1.

Statement 1 doesn't tell us anything about our denominator, which determines whether the ratio is terminating or not. Insufficient.

Statement 2 says that y = 2, it is the only even prime number. Anything divided by 2 will yield either a decimal of 0 or .5, so it is terminating. Sufficient.

Answer: B

Question 2.

Statement 1: again, nothing given on s, so it is insufficient.

Statement 2: s could be 2,3,4. Anything divided by 2 or 4 will be terminating (divided by 2 yields 0 or 0.5, divided by 4 yields 0,0.25,0.5,0.75), but anything divided by 3 could yield either 0 or 0.33333.
Insufficient

Statements 1 + 2: 100/2 = 50.0, 100/3 = 33.3333, 100/4 = 25.0, again, it could yield either a terminating or non-terminating decimal, so insufficient.

Answer: E

My Take:
Q1:
1) Gives no information about the denominator.
2) y=2
Any number divided by 2 is a terminating number
B

Q2:

s=2,3,4 since s is an integer and not negative
Y/N question
If s=2 terminating
s=4 terminating
s=3 Non-Terminating

Answer is E:

GMAT concept of terminating numbers is, If a denominator reduced to prime factors contains primes other than 2 and 5 then the fraction does not produce a terminating decimal.

1. B -- only even prime is 2 and no matter wat the number in numerator we will always get a terminating decimal...

2. E --we cant be sure whether r/s would be terminating or non-terminating
