Cookies

by Abdulla » Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:09 pm
A batch of cookies was divided among three tins: 2/3 of all the cookies were placed in either the blue tin or the green tin, and the rest were placed in the red. If 1/4 of all the cookies were placed in the blue tin, what fraction of the cookies that were placed in the other tins were placed in the green tin?

(A) 15/2
(B) 9/4
(C) 5/9
(D) 7/5
(E) 9/7

I just want to be sure that is I'm the only person who misundersood the question..

Let total cookies = 12

(2/3) of 12 = in either blue tin or green tin

so 8 cookies are in either blue tin or green tin

which means 4 are in the red tin

(1/4) * 12 = 3 cookies in blue tin (so 5 in green tin)

so we have:

3 in blue
5 in green
4 in red

what fraction of the cookies that were placed in the other tins were placed in the green tin?

meaning 5/(12-3) = 5/9

total no. of cookies = 60

2/3 = green or blue = 40

1/3 = red = 20

1/4 = blue = 15

green = 40-15 = 25

fraction required = green/(red+green) = 25/(25+20) = 25/45 = 5/9.

Hope this helps.

my problem is not to find the fraction and to pick smart numbers ... the problem was the meaning of the question ..

what fraction of the cookies that were placed in the other tins were placed in the green tin?

Other tins means what ?? it should include Blue and Red, which is other than Green ..

So Green/Blue+Red...

My english sucks but trying to catch up..

other tins is modifying the blue tin not the green, therefore the question is

1/4 of all the cookies were placed in the blue tin, what fraction of the cookies that were placed in the other tins [green & red] were placed in the green tin?

hope this helps.
