680 GMAT, 3.43 GPA - Your POV

by MKT27 » Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:48 pm
Hi there -

I am hoping to get your POV on my profile and schools I am intending on applying to for 2010... I have a 680 GMAT (43Q,40V,6's), a 3.43 GPA from U of WI Madison with a double major in Business and Social Psychology, 6.5 years of work experience - after college I moved to London and worked in sales consulting, then spent 5 years at Google, and am currently at an advertising/marketing agency managing the media strategy for 2 Fortune 100 clients. I believe I have a few very strong recommendations as well...

I am likely going to apply to:

Stanford
Kellogg
LBS
UCLA
U of Washington
Boston U

Do you have advice here? Should I go safer, or do you think that I am good shooting for those above? I am not intending on taking the GMAT again, so I want to be sure that I am setting the proper expectations for myself.

Thanks!

Dear MKT27,

I think you have an appropriate target list for schools. You are certainly in range for all with your GMAT and GPA. Likewise, you have some interesting professional experience. Since admissions decisions are based on more than the numbers, your essays, recommendations, and interviews are critical to the ultimate decision. These components give you another chance to shine and make your case for a seat in the class. Be sure to convey your successful leadership and teamwork experiences in your essays as well as a solid rationale for getting your MBA in relation to your past experiences and future career goals. If you do all of that, then you have a good chance at all of your target schools.

Best of luck,
Lisa
