Gmat 510(q :38,v: 22), need advice

by il_b_back » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:02 am
Hi all,

I appeared for gmat today and scored 510, which without a doubt is very disappointing.
I followed the og , and was consistently scoring 580 -600 in my practice tests(Kaplan and Gmat Prep), hence was quite confidant to atleast score in 600's.

Saying that, I haven't given up on a good gmat score, and planning to give much more effort in preparation for my second attempt.

To start again, I am contemplating over the idea of joining a coaching institute, but not sure how useful will it be?

thanks

If you want to improve to the 600 level and want to take a class. From my research I would recommend taking a class with Veritas. Their verbal instruction is second to none. In addition to this, to improve math I would recommend using the Manhattan GMAT math guides. In my opinion, that would be the best combination. You can talk to this guy that is currently enrolled in a Manhattan GMAT course and he said on the first day that his instructor told him that Manhattan's verbal was a "work in progress". I would look into Veritas. Good luck.

I'd like to present an addendum to my previous comment given in inequality form:

MGMAT Verbal CAT Algorithm < Kaplan Verbal CAT Algorithm ;-) although it's no secret that MGMAT Quant prep surpasses all... which is why I feel that MGMAT Class > Kaplan for the simple fact that b-schools care more about Q than V. But if you're not a native english speaker then definitely boost up that V score... well even if you are a native english speaker...

I'm not sure how much MGMAT verbal will change this year given that Kaplan bought MGMAT not to long ago... just some food for thought!
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

I've never heard of Jamboree, but I believe Veritas offers a verbal only class, which is cheaper, so you may want to go with that option.

I spoke to people at Veritas, and will go for a demo class next Sunday, one thing i made sure in the call was to confirm that
the trainers have given gmat themselves, and was told that they will show the gmat scores of all the trainers before i join .

Osirus, as you mentioned Veritas also has the option for "Verbal classes only" , but they charge almost 80 % of the total course charges for verbal. So i'm wondering if i should go for the full training instead.

I am also attending a demo class in Jamboree( this is considered to be the best in Delhi, India; yes thats where I am from)

I will post back all the feedback after the demo classes.

To ensure that i don't waste this week waiting for the training centers , I have got myself the Kaplan Gmat Math Workbook, as I want to be 200 percent confidant with all the concepts.

If you guys have any advice that can help me with starting my preparation, it will be a great help.

(I really feel that that my last attempt, which was a disaster, was majorly due to my failure in not putting a guided effort, and I dont want to make the same mistake again)
