The average hourly wage of television assemblers in Vernland has long been significantly lower than that in neighboring Borodia. Since Borodia dropped all tariffs on Vernlandian televisions three years ago, the number of televisions sold annually in Borodia has not changed. However, recent statistics show a droip in the number of television assemblers in Borodia. Therefore, updated trade statistics will probably indicate that the number of televisions Borodia imports annually from Vernland has increased.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. The number of television assemblers in Vernland has increased by at least as much as the number of television assemblers in Borodia has decreased.
B. Televisions assembled in Vernland have features that televisions assembled in Borodia do not have.
C. The average number of hours it takes a Borodian television assembler to assemble a television has not decreased significantly during the past three years.
D. The number of televisions assembled annually in Vernland has increased significantly during the past three years.
E. The difference between the hourly wage of television assemblers in Vernland and the hourly wage of television assemblers in Borodia is likely to decrease in the next few years.

Ill go with C
If C were true then the number of B's assempler's could be decrease because of higher efficiency. This must be assumed.

What the OA?

What the OA?
I would go with D

The reason: It is asking an assumption that supports the conclusion and D seems to just do that by stating- the number of television sets produced in vernland must have increased to cause Boradian to import in the past 3 years. This is also where tariff kicks in and makes sense to have less assemblers in Boradian.

Hope the mumbo-jumbo makes sense :) BTW, what is OA?

IMO C

Negate the assumption : The average number of hours it takes a Borodian television assembler to assemble a television has decreased significantly during the past three years.

In that case Borodian assemblers are producing more and hence the no. of assemblers has reduced. It weakens the argument.

I'm going to go with A.
A. The number of television assemblers in Vernland has increased by at least as much as the number of television assemblers in Borodia has decreased.
If TV assemblers have increased in Vernland at almost the same proportion as the decrease in Borodia it would mean more TV's that would have been produced in Borodia are being produced in Vernland.

I rejected D on the fact of its strong wording that TV production has increased significantly.
OA plz..

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

Premise: RECENT stats shows that the number of television assemblers decreased in B.
Conclusion: The number of televisions Borodia imports annually from Vernland has increased. Implicitly, it means, the number of TVs produced in B has decreased and the demand is fulfilled through import from V.
Assumptions: 1. Demand is same. 2. Productivity in B is same.

Now let’s check the options.

A. The number of television assemblers in Vernland has increased by at least as much as the number of television assemblers in Borodia has decreased. – extreme assumption. Avoid.
B. Televisions assembled in Vernland have features that televisions assembled in Borodia do not have. – Quality is out of scope.
C. The average number of hours it takes a Borodian television assembler to assemble a television has not decreased significantly during the past three years. – Addresses the second assumption – productivity. (Answer)
D. The number of televisions assembled annually in Vernland has increased significantly during the past three years. - Conclusion is based on RECENT report and the option talks about past three years. Hence, out of scope.
E. The difference between the hourly wage of television assemblers in Vernland and the hourly wage of television assemblers in Borodia is likely to decrease in the next few years. – Future out of scope.

Vernland started exporting to borodia after taxes were lowered and the level of imported tvs in borodia have been constant since then.
But workers in Borodia have decreased hence we may expect a fall in the no. of tvs produced in borodia and an increase in the imports.
but what if processes in borodia were mechanised now and the workers, after some training, were requiring lesser time to produce the same number of tvs.
So the author assumes that no increase in productivity has occured.
So the statisticians say that borodia will have no other option but to import tvs as the workers have decreased and the productivity has not increased

In my opinion A is the most logical one.
