daylight saving

by PAB2706 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:46 pm
Which of the following is the most logical completion of the passage below?
Many companies have been pushing for a three-week extension of daylight saving time, which would mean that the sun would continue to set an hour later during the fall months. The owners of a chain of convenience stores, for example, expect to gain $15 million a year in additional sales, mostly from people who tend to______
(A) stay away from these stores after dark
(B) stay outdoors during the fall months
(C) spend more money in the fall
(D) spend less money in the fall
(E) shop at these stores when they are pressed for time

IMO C

(A) stay away from these stores after dark - These people go by actual sun set (after dark) rather than the time, so doesn't help.

(B) stay outdoors during the fall months- These people would remain outdoors irrespective of daytime or night-time.

(C) spend more money in the fall - These people would spend more money in the fall. If fall period is extended by three weeks then they continue to spend more for additional three weeks. Correct

(D) spend less money in the fall - opposite

(E) shop at these stores when they are pressed for time- Irrelevant.

I choose A.
The stress here is more on daylight saving rather than the season.
I disagree on Opt C, because IMO daylight saving has no significance on the season and neither can it prolong the season.

Its either A or E but I would go for A. E is not correct since people who spend more money in fall they would do so whether or not the Sud would continue to set an hour later during the fall months.
A is correct since in states that the shorter the daylight, the less time people would spend at convenience stores during the fall months. The longer the daylight, more time people would spend at stores, hence, spend more money.

I think it will be A, the key here is one-extra hour per day.

IMO A. If my understanding is right, if DST is delayed by 3 weeks, then there would be more day light. Hence people who stay away from stores after dark will still come for another three weeks. Let's assume the store closing time is 7PM. If DST is not adjusted, then 7PM will be still bright. If DST is adjusted, then 7PM will be dark. Hence if it is delayed by 3 weeks, then the store can attract those custoemrs who are wary of shopping in the dark. Correct me if my reasoning is utterly wrong.

Please let us knwo the OA.
